SPED Adult Transition Program

SPED Adult Transition Program:

Transition Focus

These programs help students shift from high school to adult living, emphasizing:

  • Employment skills

  • Independent living skills

  • Community participation

  • Post-secondary education or training (if appropriate)

     Eligibility

  • Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

  • Usually age 18 to 22

  • Have completed four years of high school but still require additional support and haven’t received a regular diploma (may have a certificate of completion instead)

     Program Components

  • Vocational training / job coaching

  • Travel training (learning how to use public transportation)

  • Life skills (cooking, budgeting, hygiene, self-advocacy)

  • Social and communication skills

  • Work-based learning (internships, supported employment, etc.)

  • Connections to adult agencies (like vocational rehab, regional centers, or social services)

     Where It Happens

  • The program are based on school campus, while may operate in community settings (e.g., job sites, colleges, training centers) to promote real-world experiences.

Goal

To prepare students with disabilities for a meaningful, independent, and productive adult life, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
